Team Members

Anthony Smith, PhD, President and Chief Executive Officer, brings over 30 years’ experience in energy efficiency, solar energy, and community economic development. He served as founding first chairman of the Philadelphia Energy Association; founding Executive Director of the Community Energy Development Corporation in Philadelphia; business consultant in creating the Vermont Energy Investment Corporation (which later developed the first energy efficiency utility in the country); Commodity Trading Advisor in energy futures; National Program Leader for USDA in Community-Based Entrepreneurial Development; and founding Executive Director of the Staunton Creative Community Fund, Inc. He co-directs the Steward-Leadership MBA program for Eastern Mennonite University, and he also serves as a board member of the Stafford-Staunton IDA (Virginia Local Government Finance Corporation). He earned his Masters in Architecture from the Univ. of PA, and a PhD from the Wharton School of Management, University of Pennsylvania.

Noel Munson, Chief Operating and Technology Officer, brings extensive and varied infrastructure technology deployment experience, including Product Planner for a regional telecommunications company- NTELOS. Mr. Munson has served on the Boards of Directors for the Virginia Piedmont Technology Council, and the Virginia Technology Alliance, and as an industry advisor to the Joint Commission on Technology and Science (Privacy in the Electronic Age, and Critical Infrastructure sub-committees), the Rural Broadband Commission, Virginia ISP Alliance, and the Wireless Carriers Association. He holds a BA from UVA.

Lorna Saunders, Customer and Community Care Officer, previously served for over 15 years with the DuPont Community Credit Union in Waynesboro, VA.  Her most recent role with the Credit Union Senior Management team included serving as Vice President, Branch Retail Services, with oversight over nine branches, the call center and the sales and service initiative.  Lorna serves as a volunteer business consultant with a number of community organizations and business associations, including the Staunton Creative Community Fund.  Lorna received her BS in Business Administration and Organizational Development from Eastern Mennonite University (EMU).  She expects to complete her MBA at EMU in December, 2010.

Hugh Stoll, Chief Technology Officer, is a master electrician with over six years’ experience in renewable energy generation (solar photovoltaic and hydroelectric facilities) as well as petroleum industry facilities, controls and automation. Hugh has designed, owned and/or managed several renewable power generation installations in Washington, Virginia and North Carolina. Hugh brings further capacity in commercial and industrial scale demand side energy management as a designer and installer of energy efficient control systems. Hugh was the owner/operator of an electrical contracting firm in Washington state and now resides in Harrisonburg, Virginia in a home with a 11 kW solar photovoltaic system he designed and installed. He holds a BA from Eastern Mennonite University.

R. Macon Rich, Chief Financial Officer, provides leadership in the area of financial analysis and management for Secure Futures’ solar projects and for Secure Futures as a corporate entity. He brings considerable experience in family-owned business development, credit analysis for Dominion Bank, financial management as a former Financial Director for a home healthcare agency, and production and logistics experience in the Staunton, VA with Gannett Company and Target. He received his MBA in Finance from Duke University.

Cian Robinson, Business Development Consultant, works with Secure Futures’ business prospects and Customers in developing new projects and in providing Customer support and project management.  He operates his own consulting business, Robinson Ventures, to provide management consulting services to municipal and for-profit businesses in the areas of economic development, with a particular focus in serving rural communities in Southside and Southwest Virginia from his offices in Martinsville, VA.

Johann Zimmerman, Structural Engineer, provides engineering design services for Secure Futures, LLC in developing dual use raised truss structures and solar panel installation and mounting systems. He has practiced engineering for over 30 years in areas such as structural renovation and alterations; analysis and design for new construction; and projects incorporating sustainable building practices and renewable and alternate energy sources. His services include existing condition inspections and analysis, construction inspections; analysis and design of structural systems including footings, columns, beams, and floor, wall and roof systems and retaining walls; plan review and value engineering; and Construction Consulting. He has worked extensively in the Central America and the United States. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York and Virginia.

Erik Curren, PhD, Director of Marketing, supports sales, helps develop new products and services, and serves as the main contact for the news media. He also developed the Secure Futures website. Previously, he managed the Washington, DC office of Fenton Communications, a public relations agency specializing in sustainable businesses and public interest groups. Before that, Erik worked at the San Francisco office of the Horn Group’s, a public relations agency serving technology companies, and in the San Francisco and Los Angeles offices of Hill and Knowlton, one of the world’s largest public relations and public affairs agencies. Erik received his BA from Washington and Lee University in Virginia and his PhD in English from the University of California at Irvine.
